Academics The Elementary School academic program focuses on four vital areas: (1) the
basics of reading, writing and mathematics; (2) development of study skills;
(3) practical application; and (4) integration with a broad curriculum. Focus on Basics Academic basics are the footing upon which an education is build and it continues to be a primary focus in the Elementary School. Reading in volume and reading a variety of books, all with good comprehension, are the primary elements of the reading program. Proficiency at instant response computational skills is developed in mathematics while new math concepts are introduced seminar-style. Writing focuses on mastering penmanship, writing discipline and volume writing, grammar and spelling skills. Curriculum Our Elementary School curriculum focuses on the basics, while immersing students
in the arts, physical and social sciences, foreign language and plenty of
practical application to the real world. Study Skills At the Elementary School level, stress is on becoming more and more aware of study barriers and learning to handle them when needed. The dictionary becomes a regular study tool as the student gains the ability to recognize words not understood and to thoroughly define them. The student is also learning to work more independently through the use of checksheets while supervised closely by the teacher. By the latter half of Elementary School, checksheets become the principal method of study and students begin to work with each other more regularly, using their study skills. |
