Hands-On Young children learn a great deal by observing the world around them. We encourage this by getting students involved in activities both inside and outside the classroom. Students in the Lower School spend well over half their day involved in some kind of hands-on activities or creative projects. Walk into a classroom at this level, and you'll generally find a beehive of motion.
"Research" is a concept that helps a child to observe activities or phenomena in the environment, thereby learning first-hand about basic concepts in physics, biology or chemistry. Students through the Elementary School engage in a variety of research projects as part of their regular curriculum. FIELD TRIPS Getting out to observe or interact with the world outside Delphi is a big part of the program. In the classrooms, students are encouraged to connect what they are studying with the real world. Field trips help them to make that connection even more real. On the La Jolla campus, students have easy walking access to a number of cultural as well as natural resources. At the San Marcos site, Lower School students have four and a half wooded acres to explore right on their own campus. The campus is also very close to the San Diego Wild Animal Park, Legoland, Hollandia Dairy and about 20 minutes to the beaches. Whether they are exploring sea life among the many tidepools along the beach or touring the latest show at the La Jolla Museum of Art, Delphi students are exposed to the outside world as much as possible. We work with students to help them integrate what they are studying in the classrooms with what goes on in the "real world"all of which not only increases their understanding but provides them with lots of fresh air and exercise on a regular basis.
MUSIC & ART Because the essence of art is communication, we emphasize performance and exhibition in our arts activities. Students of all ages participate in drama performances for parents and examples of our students' artwork are always on display around the school. In La Jolla, music and art are taught within the classrooms. Students are
introduced to various mediums as well as learning about different significant
artists. In San Marcos, art is taught several times per week. ATHLETICS & PHYSICAL SKILLS Emphasis in athletics is on discipline, hard work, team spirit and fun. Given our close proximity to the La Jolla Recreation Center, our students can take advantage of the many facilities available there. Students have the opportunity to participate in various sports as a result, including tennis, swimming, basketball, softball and volleyball. Activities such as ice skating, hiking, and bowling vary throughout the school year but are typically offered sometime during the Summer Session. In San Marcos there is a large field on the grounds used for various sports and games. Physical education is taught daily. The campus is also three blocks away from the Woodland Park Recreation Center that has pool facilities open to the public. During the Summer Session and on hot days in the traditional school year, the pool is used for free swim time. |
